Meeting 4- Props and Location List

^^ Props and Location List ^^

In our second meeting we sorted out out props and location list. We went through scene by scene and deciding what we need to get our opening sequence done. For the main female girl we needed slippers, analogue clock, glasses, Cereal, towel, poster, book, bike and for the boy we need digital clock, apple, body spray and  a car. We need two different bedroom with shower for the boy and girl as we need to record them getting ready, we need a kitchen so that we can get the female character eating breakfast in their. We need to to record scene of both characters traveling to school so we need the location of the road and we also need school so we can show the characters meeting. We now need to get permission so that we will be able to record in the location we decided to and find all the props we need.

Meeting 2 and 3

In our following lesson, with a rough idea in our heads, so we decided to roughly storyboard with post-it-note. In our storyboard we labeled every scene with where we need to film it, the angle we gonna use, the props we need, we didn't get far so we planned to continue this next meeting and finished it off. In this meeting we also started to think about the characters who we thought can play part in our film.

Meeting 1

Today was the first lesson out coursework. After our teacher told us about what we have to do in our coursework, we started the planning for our opening scene. In our first meeting we wanted to decide what genre we like to do. we talked about different genres and  finally come to conclusion that we will do Romantic Comedy and then we came up with some rough ideas: we wanted to do modern version of Beauty and Beast. The story will have a nerdy girl with popular guy who has opposite characteristics who falls in love. First we was confused with how to show to the audience the opposite personality of the characters and finally we had an idea of showing the girl and boy getting dressed. this scence would be done like Legally Blond opening scene. This way it will be easy to show the personality and information about the characters.

Our Choice

We chose to do a romantic comedy with the influences of 'A Walk To Remember' and 'Legally Blonde'. Both these films have key links to our own idea (opening sequence to Legally Blonde and similar themes to A Walk To Remember). We incorporated the idea of parallel narratives (similar to Legally Blonde) as we found this an effective way to introduce multiple characters, while also highlighting the differences in their lifestyles. We used ideas from 'A Walk To Remember' for example the transformation's of the stereotypical characters. We used some of the conventions of the stereotypical characters but also straying from these with our own unique ideas.

A Walk to Remember

“A Walk to remember” has the similar theme as what we are planning to do for our media work, which is Romantic Comedy. The poster has white background, which represent purity.  From researching on the Internet about Romantic Comedy, I found out that most romantic comedies have white background; this might be because white connotes purity and most romantic comedies are about two people meeting and falling in love.

The pictures of the characters are set opposition to each other. The girl looks innocent and seductive whereas the boy looks serious and slightly cocky. The way characters are positioned on the poster is really important because it creates enigmas and allows you to try and see if you can figure what might happen.  In this case from looking at them I think that maybe something might happen between the two characters.

The title is appears at the bottom of the page with white writing and with blue background.  The contrast of the white against the blue is immediately striking.  This makes the viewer read the title, which creates the mystery of “what do you mean by walk to remember?” This might persuade someone to watch the movie. The poster has a comment from the press which is a good thing because most people decide to see a film from looking at other peoples view.  The star’s names “Mandy Moore” and “Shane West” creates the brand identity for this movie. Having the names of the stars on the poster will attract the target audience that in this case teenagers. Teenagers typically look at who is starring in the film when deciding what to see. This is because they might be fan of them or attracted to the actor/actress.

Legally Blonde opening sequence

The main title in “Legally Blonde” is positioned in the middle of the picture in pink and white font to make it stand out against the background and to give us an idea of what the film is going to be like.  The title is written in a font that looks as it has been written by hand which suggest that the film isn’t going to be very serious and it’s going to be an easy watch. The pink lettering in the opening credits and cursive writing affect the female stereotype of 'pink'. When the title begins to be written the image behind becomes more in focus so by the time the title is fully written the image behind it is also clear so everything becomes clearer now we know the title and what the film is going to be about.
We know a lot about the main character by the end of the sequence. Throughout we see her getting ready but her identity is built up and kept from the viewer until the card reaches her room, as she is the most important character.  We are given lots of clues about what she looks like, what type of person she is and what she like.  We can tell from the clues that she is a girly girl who cares lot about what she looks like, we can also see that she is popular, from the homecoming queen banner, likes designer bags, from her Tiffany necklace and Prada shopping bag, and also is caring and thoughtful as she has a dog which looks well kept and is dressed up in matching clothes to her. We only see her face when the music is finished and when the letter is finally passed to her and we find out she is Elle.
The first few camera shots are of the girl pampering herself which only adds to our first stereotype. Stereotypes are shown clearly in this opening sequence and overall in the film in general. This film aims to confront the stereotype and tries to put end to any sexism and stereotypes.
Not many things are given away in the opening scene, this is because they want to keep the audience wanting to know what’s happening but the clue about the plot is from the card we follow through the scene. This is an example of an enigma code in the opening scene as we are questioning what the card is for and why Elle is is getting it. This keeps the audience hooked as they want to know what the card is for and whether it is going to be a large part of the movie.
